Decarbonising our region’s homes has a vital role to play in tackling the climate emergency.

And the importance of this is brought into sharp focus with the fact that the UK’s 25 million homes emit more carbon emissions than all its 28 million cars. West Yorkshire is aiming to reach net-zero by 2038 and we’re taking a leading role to help the region reach that target.

A track record of delivery

We’re responding to the climate emergency by making our homes more resilient to the impacts of climate change by improving energy efficiency through retrofit projects and installing gas-free heating technologies.

By doing this, our partnership members collectively cut CO2 emissions from our homes by around 24,000 tonnes from 2020/21 to 2022/23 – that’s a 13% decrease. We’ve also installed nearly 3,000 solar PV systems and 3,200 heat pumps, plus we’ve secured funding from the Government’s Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund to retrofit a total of 5,311 homes.

At a time when many people are struggling with energy bills, retrofits and green heating solutions have a crucially important role to play in alleviating fuel poverty.

There are also major benefits in collaboration for this area as we look at best practice in building low carbon homes, using modular construction methods and sharing our expertise in accelerating the delivery of these homes.

Over the past few years, we’ve trialled new technologies and there is more opportunity to collaborate at scale with partners to find new green solutions that will benefit the environment and our customers.
